What is the Difference Between Remedial & Sports Massage?

Remedial massage is what most people commonly associate with massage. It is great for working through tight spots in areas such as the shoulders and upper back.

Sports massage is a more specialised form of massage. As the name suggests, it is more sport-specific and tailored to the specific muscle groups that you use during your gym training or sport.

Remedial Massage Sports Massage
Is intended as a remedy Is used as recovery sport or training
Very thorough & precise Aimed at softening the muscles quickly and painlessly
Treats you head to toe to find & release points of tension Is more dynamic (eg: stretching)
Designed to iron out any areas of tension or knots Less intention towards trigger points (unless currently painful)
Can be targeted, focussed session. (Eg upper body, shoulders and neck treatment.) Techniques and pressure vary depending on the patient's training program.
Can be combined with myofascial release, trigger point therapy and dry needling Is focused on flushing & working through the muscles to improve recovery times.
Applies general long strokes, stimulating blood flow & frees up fibrous tension

While Remedial Massage must be performed by a qualified remedial massage therapist, sports massage at My Health Clinic is always performed by a university qualified physiotherapist with an intricate knowledge of the body’s movement patterns so that you can be treated safely and effectively.

What Does Massage Therapy Treat?

  • Muscles that are damaged,
  • Knotted muscles,
  • Tense or immobile muscles.

It is useful for a number of problems that affect the muscles, tendons and bones.

Specific conditions treated using Massage Therapies can include:

  • whiplash,
  • muscular atrophy,
  • fibrositis,
  • spondylitis,
  • arthritis and
  • frozen shoulder.

What Are the Benefits of Massage Therapy?

Remedial massage can stimulate the blood supply, make joints more mobile, and help to repair damaged tissues.

The Massage Therapist will aim to balance the length, tone and tension of muscles and tendons, which restores the correct position of the bones, increases blood flow and helps heal injuries.

Applications for Massage therapy can include:

  • Pre Exercise - massage is an effective component of a warm up prior to exercise as it stimulates blood flow, bringing oxygenated blood and nutrients to the area to enhance performance.
  • Post Exercise - it can be used to bring nutrient and oxygen-rich blood to fatigued muscles, as well as flushing out waste products produced during exercise in the muscles, such as lactic acid. This can reduce delayed onset muscular soreness (doms), enabling you to feel fresher sooner so that you can get back to training hard.
  • Drainage of swelling, lymphedema - due to its blood-stimulating properties, sports massage is effective in reducing swelling, enhancing your recovery and mobility.
  • General loosen up - soft tissue therapy is great for loosening up tight or fatigued muscles, enhancing your flexibility and mobility so that you can feel great.
  • Relaxation - there is something very therapeutic about feeling your tight muscles release. feel your stresses slip away as you loosen up in what is a very relaxing experience.

How Does Massage Therapy Differ from Physiotherapy?

If there is an acute injury, chronic condition, significant pain or problem such as neck or back pain, headache, sprains or strains etc., Then the appropriate treatment will be physiotherapy.

An My Health Clinic physiotherapy consultation includes:

  • A full comprehensive assessment and differential diagnosis
  • Patient education on the condition and treatment plan
  • Hands on treatment - a combination of mobilisation, manipulation, soft tissue techniques, dry needling and electrical stimulation
  • Prescription and instruction of individualised exercise program

Physiotherapy therefore will be able to identify the main problem/s through the comprehensive assessment and treat the cause through a more extensive range of treatment techniques. Massage may be a small component of an appropriate treatment program.

Is Massage Therapy only for Athletes?

Anyone who leads an active lifestyle can benefit from getting a regular sports massage. Many high-level athletes choose to have regular sports massages for the many performance benefits it provides.

However, this doesn’t mean that the benefits are exclusive to elite athletes - it’s actually all the more reason that you should try this awesome technique! Now you too can experience elite My Health Clinic treatment and witness the benefits in your own fitness.

Types Of Massage Treatments Available

At My Health Clinics we employ the following specific techniques:

  • Deep Tissue Massage - With deep tissue massage, firm and flowing strokes are applied to the problem areas of the body, which eases tension. The therapist may use their thumbs, knuckles, or elbows to achieve the appropriate direction, depth, or pressure.
  • Trigger Point Therapy - Trigger point therapy uses cycles of pressure and release (rest), and may be accompanied by deep breathing. This technique also helps to ease tension, and is often used in conjunction with deep tissue massage to achieve optimal results.
  • Stretch Therapy - In this type of massage, the therapist will assist the patient with stretching various areas of the body, which helps to relieve pain, enhance flexibility, improve range of motion, and improve circulation.
  • Joint Mobilisation - Joint mobilization therapy works by applying a low speed, passive movement of a joint, encouraging intracapsular movement, and improving stiffness and pain. It’s usually targeted at a specific problem joint.
  • Myofascial Release - Myofascial tissue is the fibrous connective tissue that supports and protects your muscles and bones. Myofascial release works by applying a specific, local stretch-based massage technique to knotted areas of the body, or other trigger points that help to relieve pain in the affected area.
  • Thermotherapy and Cryotherapy - Thermotherapy uses heated objects such as heat packs, hot water bottles, or hot baths to induce muscle relaxation, and promote blood flow. Cryotherapy uses cooled objects such as cold compresses, ice packs, or cold baths to decrease blood flow, which reduces inflammation and the risk of tissue damage.
  • Functional Release Cupping - placing cups on the skin under suction to affect the underlying connective tissue such as strong fascia to relieve pain, inflammation, and improve blood flow.
  • Complex Taping - as an alternative treatment for physical pain to apply directed pressure or support for an affected muscle.
  • Dry needling - also called intramuscular stimulation uses fine needles to stimulate and release trigger points in areas of knotted or hard muscle.
